Just yesterday, I arrived in the wondrous Copenhagen. After about twelve hours of travel and a lot of snoozing on the plane, I managed to get from Orlando, Florida, to Reykjavik, Iceland, and then finally Copenhagen, Denmark. After about thirty minutes of paperwork, I was introduced to my incredibly friendly host family: parents Ingeborg and Neil, and their daughter Signe. Even though I had only communicated with Ingeborg over Facebook, I immediately felt connected to all of them. Their smiles were enough to soothe any previous hesitancy. We then headed to the car and traveled from the capital to their lovely little town, named Hareskovby (which, when translated into English, means something along the lines of “Rabbit Forest;” could that be any cuter?). It’s quite quiet and quaint, which is something I cherish since it starkly differs from DC. The community is very tightly knit as well, and the homes are beyond adorable. The second I entered their home, I fell in love. My room in particular feels like a place I would pin while searching online, as I am definitely digging the aesthetic. Another surprise: the abundance of plants (especially cacti!!) throughout the home. Being surrounded by so much green is such a comforting feeling.
After lunch (side note: the meals have been absolutely grand), we biked down to the train station (the one I will use each morning to travel to DIS), and then continued on through the Bagsværd forest into Sopeinholm. By this time, we were completely surrounded by dense forestry in a winter wonderland. Eventually, the paths turned into more of a park, with vast land, a greenhouse, and a little café. Aside from the breathtaking view, my heart was full with all the puppies spotted along the trip. I was so warm from everything around me, I could barely remember my fingertips were frozen to the core.
Tomorrow, I make my first trek into Copenhagen to DIS. I’m excited to ‘experience’ the commute and learn about what will take up a good portion of these next four months.
until next time,
elle
